Job Description
Julia Morgan School for Girls, an independent middle school serving girls in grades 6–8 in Oakland, California, seeks a relational, dynamic, and forward-thinking leader to serve as its Associate Head of School for Student Life and Community Engagement. Founded in 1999 on the conviction that girls deserve a school intentionally and unapologetically designed for them, Julia Morgan is a small, mission-driven community of approximately 133 students where inquiry, mentorship, and authentic student voice animate daily life. Spirited, collaborative, and deeply committed to girls’ growth, the school cultivates young people who are confident, resilient, and unafraid to speak up, step forward, and shape the world around them.
In recent years, Julia Morgan has navigated leadership transition and pandemic disruption with resilience and reflection, emerging with renewed clarity about its purpose and direction. Under the leadership of new Head of School Kathrina Weekes, the school is entering a new chapter marked by growing enrollment, an upcoming accreditation cycle, and a capital campaign in the feasibility stage. This is a moment of forward momentum: an opportunity to build boldly on a strong relational foundation while ensuring that the school’s structures and programs fully support the vibrancy, collaboration, and ambition that define its student life.
Reporting to the Head of School, the Associate Head of School will play a central role in shaping this next phase of purposeful growth and visible leadership. Created in anticipation of the retirement of the long-serving Director of Student Life and as part of a broader evolution of leadership structure, the position brings together oversight of a comprehensive student experience and family engagement strategy, ensuring that all aspects of student life, discipline, social-emotional learning (SEL), parent partnerships, high school placement, and after-school programming align with the school's mission and values. The Associate Head will serve as a strategic partner to the Head of School and as a daily champion of the student experience, helping to cultivate a cohesive and involved community in which girls are encouraged to take initiative, support one another, and lead with confidence.
The position calls for a highly visible and engaged leader who thrives in the joyful intensity of middle school life and who brings both warmth and structure to their work. This leader will be present in the hallways and classrooms, steady in moments of challenge, and deeply invested in the social and emotional growth of every student. The successful candidate will demonstrate emotional maturity, a deep belief in the power of girls’ education, and the ability to translate vision into disciplined action while honoring the school’s culture of collaboration, courage, and shared purpose.
