THE OPPORTUNITY

This Dean of Faculty role is a full-time administrative position, including the teaching of one class, that reports to and works very closely the Associate Head of School, beginning on July 1, 2027. The ideal candidate will delight in being part of a community that appreciates an array of vibrant ideas and viewpoints and wants to nurture and celebrate students through adolescence. In addition, this candidate will bring warmth and collegiality to the work while upholding the school’s mission and professionalism. 

The Dean of Faculty supports faculty in their living out of Prep’s mission. This involves supervising the faculty growth and evaluation system and fostering a collaborative culture and responding to faculty needs as they arise. This work is highly interdependent and exists in deep collaboration with other administrators such as the Associate Head of School, the Assistant Head for Student Life, the Dean of Students, the Director of Scheduling, and the Director of Human Resources. 

The role has existed in its current form since 2023 and offers many ways to contribute meaningfully to the thriving of a successful and financially robust school. As just one example, an immediate stewardship role for the Dean of Faculty will be to shepherd the rollout of a new faculty growth and evaluation system focused on faculty renewal, experimentation and collaboration, a process developed by the Academic Life Committee over the past two years.

PRIMARY EXPECTATIONS

Primary expectations will consist of but are not limited to the following:

  • Proactively fulfill all professional responsibilities, such as chaperoning on- and off- campus events, conducting an advisory group, participating in an annual outdoor education overnight trip, attending faculty-staff meetings, assessing student work thoughtfully, contributing to departmental and schoolwide discussions of creative pedagogy in a variety of meetings, covering occasional classes, and participating in the admissions process as needed,
  • Engage in meaningful, school-funded professional growth to develop further as an administrator, including at least one formal individual growth opportunity in the first three semesters at Flintridge Prep. 
  • Set and fulfill annual goals, after discussion with the Associate Head of School, that relate to the school’s Characteristics of Professional Excellence, Portrait of a Wolf, DEIB Why Statement, and other values statements
  • Enhance the student life of the school through an extracurricular presence (clubs, athletics, etc.), determined in concert with the Associate Head of School
  • Visibly support and embody the school’s mission, vision, values, Honor Code, and strategic priorities

PRIMARY DUTIES

Primary duties will consist of but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach one class to students in grades 7-12, determined based on discipline expertise. (At Flintridge Prep it is standard for academic/student life administrators to teach, reflecting the honor the school gives to the classroom experience.)
  • Steward the faculty growth and evaluation system in conjunction with the associate head, including keeping track of the system’s different years (Nurturing Community, Igniting Inquiry, Inspiring Others), observing classes, drafting department chair evaluation letters, and overseeing student experience surveys
  • Warmly uphold a culture of professionalism in the faculty (e.g., chaperoning duties, grade entry, student attendance, assignments posting, etc.)
  • Supervise department chairs, extracurricular performing arts director, and other faculty departments as needed with departmental logistics and personnel, meeting regularly with each head of department
  • Supervise creation of overall schedule with Director of Scheduling 
  • Supervise New Teacher Orienter and new teacher program, including orientation, mentors, and new teacher meetings 
  • Help Associate Head, as needed, in planning Academic Life Committee and faculty professional growth meetings  
  • Determine faculty assignments in collaboration with Department Chairs and Associate Head
  • Participate in faculty hiring and coordinate visit logistics
  • Communicate about substitutes with Substitute Coordinator and approve personal day absences
  • Approve faculty professional growth requests, in conjunction with professional growth committee, and field trips proposals, in conjunction with associate head
  • Manage UC course submission, AP course audits, and website course description update processes
  • Draft annual updates of Faculty Handbook, coordinating with administrators compiling Employee Handbook and Parent/Guardian & Student Handbook
  • Maintain an up to date Faculty-Staff Resources page on LMS
  • Assist testing coordinator when needed with faculty proctors for midterms/finals and standardized tests 
  • Manage annual projects such as PSAT Day/class field trips. 
  • Coordinate special projects at the request of the head or associate head of school

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Has experience working with and a deep appreciation of adolescents 
  • Has at least a bachelor’s and master’s degree
  • Has 7+ years of secondary teaching experience
  • Has 3+ years of administrative experience
  • Handles highly confidential and sensitive information with discretion 
  • Has demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work
  • Brings a flexible, innovative, kind, can-do approach to administrative work
  • Has experience in an extracurricular activity that can translate to work with students

The salary range for this position, based on three to five years of administrative experience, is $150,000 to $170,000. This position is full-time, on-site, and benefits eligible, including relocation assistance.
